Terrano is a dry wine obtained from the grape-vine called "Refosco". The area where Terrano del Carso (Terrano of the Karst) is made is known by its "red soil", which, together with the moderate and sunny climate, gives this wine a special flavour. Terrano has nevertheless a low alcohol content and doctors prescribe it to patients because the acids contained in it have a beneficial influence on the digestive tract. Anaemic patients can benefit from it too. Therapeutic properties of Terrano were already known in ancient Rome. In his writings Pliny describes a delicious wine made in the region of the Karst.
In 1986 the Administration of the Province of Trieste promoted the initiative entitled " The Wine-Route of Terrano" in order to enhance the image of this typical local wine. The wine-route goes from Opicina-Opčine to Visogliano-Vižovlje and includes 18 restaurants which serve the Terrano of the karst and typical local dishes. We suggest that you taste it with hors-d'oeuvres, game and any kind of meat.
Special sign-posts lead visitors to the restaurants which participate in the initiative. The Province of Trieste is closely involved in all the preparations for this outstanding initiative from the installation of sign-posts to the organization of the promotional Campaign. The Wine-Route of Terrano winds through attarctive and pictoresque landscape of the Karst plateau, known world wide for its characteristic natural phenomenons and attractions.
